How to care for your
corset
(prolonging the life of a corset)
Corset Liners - Using corset liner(s) will prolong the
life or your corsets by protecting them from body oils and perspiration.
We have found that corsets are more comfortable when worn over a liner,
and your corsets will not need to be dry cleaned as often when using a
liner/protector. Our corset liners are made of a cotton/lycra blend and
should be hand washed and dried flat.
Care & Cleaning - Because
the process of dry cleaning can be rough on corsets over time, and yet
the only safe way to deep clean them, for occasional corset freshening
we recommend using a product such as “Febreze” fabric refresher.
Spray the corset lightly on the inside lining (be very careful to not
spray satin brocades, velvets and other specialty fabrics directly), and
hang your corset by the corset laces in front of a flat fan to dry. The
fabric can be spot cleaned with a damp washcloth, but again, be very careful
with specialty fabrics. When storing your corsets, hang them over a tubular
hanger by the laces. They should not be folded or rolled for storage.
Breaking In – We cannot
over-emphasize the fact that your new corset must be broken in slowly
and over time. Corsets must first mold and conform to ones figure in a
comfortably laced state for several wearings, prior to lacing-in tightly.
While all of our authentic corsets are made of the most durable construction,
with strength in mind, they cannot sustain being tightly laced and worn
for an evening out (bending, sitting, dancing, etc.) without being properly
broken in first. Our corsets are designed to cinch in the waistline from
2”-6” depending on your body. This does NOT mean that you
can put your corset on and cinch your waistline in dramatically the first
few times you wear it. Over-tightening your new corset can, and will,
cause damage. The stitching may come loose or break, the front busk may
tear from the pockets it is sewn into, and the grommets may pop out. These
are issues that can only be avoided by breaking in your new corset over
time. All of the corsets purchased from Corset Connection undergo a detailed
and thorough inspection at least 3 times prior to reaching their final
owner. This extensive quality control is necessary with high end merchandise.
You *must* take the time to wear your corset for a few hours at a time
until is has molded itself to your body, and has adjusted to your body’s
shape.
Damage – In the case that
your corset is damaged during wear, please let us know so that we can
refer you to a proper corsetiere or seamstress to have your corset repaired.
Grommets can be replaced, stitching can be repaired and other common issues
can be addressed. We want you to enjoy your new corset for years…
so be sure to let us know when we can be of help.
